Season 5 pick up right where it off at the end of season 4 with Dexter discovering his son Harrison in a pool of his wife Rita's blood. A shock Dexter is outside on the front lawn holding his crying son as police arrive at his house not soon after Dexter's sister Debra arrives on the scene. Debra goes to Dexter after telling two police officers to back off of her brother as she tries to get answers from an in shock Dexter, Dexter hands over Harrison to her and tells them that "Rita's inside" and also says "It was me" which later on he doesn't remember saying.
Inside the house Mauska and Quinn take a look at the murder scene and Mauska believes that this was done by the Trinity Killer; even though this doesn't fit the Trinity Killers usual pattern because he has never killed a married woman before in her house. Quinn on the other hand doesn't think it is the Trinity Killer. LaGuerta and Angel finally arrive at the murder scene and LaGuerta inform them that the FBI will be handling the investigation of Rita's murder none of them likes the fact that the FBI is handling the investigation. Quinn become suspicious about whether Dexter killed Rita when he sees the next door neighbor taking her death a lot harder than Deter.
The next day, at the police station everyone's listening to the 911 call that Dexter made the night before in which Dexter gives the operator information on the incisions on his wife's body. But only Quinn finds the 911 call to be disturbing and voices it by saying "His wife just died, he's submitting a lab report." Mauska feeling guilty for what he told Dexter accidentally lets it slip to Quinn that he saw Rita and the neighbor kissing at Thanksgiving; which leads Quinn to talk to the neighbor who makes it clear that what happen at Thanksgiving only happen once and that Dexter punch him because of it. He decides to take what he has learn to LaGuerta who makes it clear to him that the FBI is handling the investigation and to leave it alone. Quinn tries to make the argument that if they didn't know Dexter he being the husband would be the prime suspect.
Remaining supportive of her brother even though she's still puzzled by his confession on the front lawn the night before, she tries to help him with Harrison and the funeral arrangement for Rita. Cody, Astor and their grandparents arrive at the apartment were Dexter tells them that Rita is dead both kids take it hard but Astor is the one whole ends up getting mad at him and storming out. When he follows her Astor screams at him saying, "We all would have been better off if she'd never met you" Cody and Astor end up leaving with their grandparent for the night.
Reeling from his guilty and what Astor said to him Dexter decides to leave the kids with Debra and leave town forever. Before taking off he goes to the funeral home to see Rita one last time there he tells her "I was never really honest with you. I'm a serial killer, that's what I am. I led you to believe I'm a human being, but I'm not. That's a lie". With one last gesture he touches her hand and leaves.
Still believing that this is what's best for everyone Dexter heads out on his boat to the open sea but his subconscious gets the better of him and he returns for the funeral. He gives a heart felt eulogy with the words "She died a brutal death, and I can't fix it. But, I know I have to try, here in Miami with the people who knew her ... and who care about her ...who loved her. Like I did he voices to himself.
A great send off to a the character/actress Rita(Julie Benz) who played her so well.
